Dental Irrigation

The oral irrigation is the direct application of a jet of water or mouthwash recommended by your dentist, which helps remove bacteria that accumulate on the teeth and gums that are difficult to access.

Water jets provide improved oral health of the gums and has been shown clinically that the use of a water jet in conjunction with manual brushing provides a 93% efficiency improvement in gingival health compared to the use only the manual toothbrush. Oral water jets are indicated in general terms and are particularly useful for persons with orthodontics, implants or crowns, as well as people suffering from diabetes.

Oral Irrigation

Oral irrigation is indicated to everyone in general so virtually anyone can benefit from it. It is particularly useful for people with implants and in patients with braces. Thanks to the combination of water and pressure, you can get a lower level of subgingival pathogens that are directly responsible for the infection and inflammation that causes insertion loss and bone. The combination of different forms of dental hygiene allows thorough cleaning of periodontal pockets and furcal areas.

Once finished with the traditional oral hygiene: brushing, flossing and mouthwash, it is useful to use a water jet (dental irrigation), as they are very easy to use and also make the spaces in which interdental brushes to or silk could be lost and result in a healthier mouth is obtained.

Benefits of oral irrigation

  • Improved removal of dental caries avoiding biofilm is obtained.
  • Reduces bleeding and improves gum health.
  • Controls inflammation of gums and gingivitis.
  • Allows cleaning and care crowns, implants and braces.
  • Allows better care when people have special needs of oral hygiene.
  • Provides a better feeling of cleanliness and freshness in the oral cavity.

Recently, there has been a renewed interest in oral irrigation. Numerous studies have supported the hypothesis that daily watering device with pulsating water jet improves oral health. There have also been studies that evaluate the effectiveness of different antimicrobial agents added to the reservoir of the irrigator. These studies have had mixed results, and many experts believe that, depending on the antibacterial agent, the improvement can be substantial.

For oral irrigation serving

The main purpose of oral irrigation is to reduce harmful and therefore the risk and severity of periodontal disease bacteria. Studies have shown that daily oral irrigation has the potential to suppress periodontal pathogens located inside the mouth. Oral irrigation has shown a reduction in proinflammatory mediators. Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria causing an increase in cytokine levels, leading to bone resorption. Daily oral irrigation leads to a reduction in proinflammatory cytokine which leads to a slight, but significant, increase of periodontal disease. In addition, oral irrigation has shown a significant reduction in bleeding, gingivitis, periodontal pathogens and decay.

Patients who may benefit from oral irrigation include those with braces, implants, crowns and bridges, diabetes, periodontal maintenance, gingivitis and those whose traditional oral hygiene may be less than ideal.

Daily oral irrigation

There are several types of oral irrigators, but like all devices of dental cleaning requires daily use for maximum effectiveness. The most common type of household is an irrigator pulsatile flow. Also there are direct flow or constant flow. Other oral irrigator is using pulse stream (magnetizedirrigator). The hypothesis is that the charged water decreases stone formation and achieves the same benefits given to non-magnetic irrigators.

There is also a type of irrigator microbubbles incorporating air into the water stream. These bubbles are designed to enhance the breakage of the plate and thereby reduce gingival inflammation.

There are several reasons why the teeth daily watering is beneficial to oral health. One reason is to remove the plate and dilute toxins. A second reason is the control of gingivitis, especially in those patients who do not or cannot make a proper interproximal hygiene. The oral irrigator is good for those whose dental home care is less than ideal. A third reason that oral irrigation is beneficial is that you can improve bad breath by reducing pathogenic bacteria.
